Executive Director Jaewon Choi met H.E. Prof. Dr. Joseph Akingube Adelegan, Executive Director of Partners in Population and Development (PPD), and the organisation's senior staff, opening talks on youth engagement, funding and PPD's representation at the United Nations.
PPD is an intergovernmental organisation created at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo to advance South-South cooperation in reproductive health, population and development. The meeting was hosted at the organisation's headquarters in Dhaka, with the Foundation's Secretariat joining by videoconference.
The two Executive Directors discussed constructive collaboration between the institutions in three areas: youth engagement across PPD member states, Foundation funding to PPD, and cooperation on the establishment of Permanent Observer Missions of PPD in New York, Geneva and Vienna.
Both organisations agreed to begin negotiations on a memorandum of understanding and a binding agreement covering the Foundation's in-kind and monetary contributions to PPD. The instruments would address PPD's engagement with intergovernmental institutions, youth engagement across its membership, and the general well-being of young people in PPD member states.
Modalities were also discussed to facilitate mutual participatory rights between the two organisations, including the potential provision of mutual observer status in their governing bodies.
Negotiations on the memorandum of understanding will be taken forward by the two secretariats, and the Foundation will publish the outcome once the instruments are concluded.
Bilateral meetings such as this one are conducted by the Office of the Executive Director and the Foundation's observer offices, which maintain working relationships with member states, intergovernmental organisations and civil society partners.
